GREEN FLAG STATUS AWARDED

Green Flag Hoisted 25 July 2011 Green Flag Celebration

25 July 2011 Beaumont Park has been awarded GREEN FLAG STATUS.  Crow Nest and Wilton Park also received the award for the first time.  Thanks go to the Kirklees team, John Mason - head gardener whose ideas and hard work have made a huge contribution, Maryke Woods - Park Development Officer, Dave Cooley - manager and Steve Taylor - Divisional manager.  Over the past two years Steve Taylor has obtained further work forces from the'Build Project', Future Jobs Fund, and many apprentices and we thank them for their contribution.  Our volunteers have also put in a great deal of hard work and together we are now all appreciating the efforts.

We have to also thank HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND for their support over the past few years which has enabled us to restore the bandstand, install signs and produce leaflets.  THE BIG LOTTERY fund - AWARDS FOR ALL has also given us grants to improve our services.  KIRKLEES ENVIRONMENT UNIT, KIRKLEES ARTS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD and YORKSHIRE GARDENS TRUST have all awarded us grants to continue the improvement in the park.

This is just the start of the 5 year plan - more hard work needed to retain the award!!!!!

The Green Flag Award® scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK.

It was first launched in 1996 to recognise and reward the best green spaces in the country. The first awards were given in 1997 and, many years later, it continues to provide the benchmark against which our parks and green spaces are measured. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve high environmental standards, setting a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.

Entries for the Green Flag Award® are open to parks/green spaces located in the UK. We are also currently piloting the scheme in The Netherlands and Germany.
