Blast Wall

Blast WallThis primitive air raid shelter was built during the Second World War to give some protection to Park visitors and gardeners in the event of an air raid which was considered a distinct possibility as the Park is in close proximity to the engineering works of David Browns who were making components for tanks and gears for the Spitfire aero engines and therefore a likely target for German bombers.

Each of the archways behind the blast wall contained a bench in Victorian times.
