THE FISH, THE LODGE and THE BANDSTAND

Golden Orfe

Golden OrfeDue to the amount of concern about the fish in the cascade we can report that they are well looked after and doing extremely well.  Kirklees gardeners have put tunnels and rocks for them to hide under following reports that the Heron pays an early morning visit to the pond for its breakfast.  We would like point out that it was neither Kirklees Council or FoBP who put the fish in the pond but we are grateful for the interest shown by regular visitors to the park.   The Crosland Moor Junior School pupils who do gardening in the park every Monday morning have christened the Golden Orfe "Nemo" and "Dora"!

16 March 2010 - Thank you to Mr and Mrs Secombe of Linthwaite who have donated another shoal of fish, some small and some very large.  You may see a very large creamish fish - this has been named polaris.   THE PLASTIC HERON, WHICH WAS DONATED ALONG WITH THE FISH, HAS BEEN STOLEN ALREADY (21 March 2010)

Items have appeared in the Huddersfield Examiner letters section recently regarding the Lodge and The Bandstand.  The Lodge was sold by the Council years ago, it has grade II listing status and the owners are responsible for keeping the building in reasonable condition.  There was a public notice in the Huddersfield Examiner on 25 March 2010 saying that an offer of £140,000 has been made and any interested parties must submit any higher offers to the selling agent before an exchange of contracts takes place.

Kirklees Design and Property Services have drawn up a plan for the reinstatement of the bandstand and it is likely it will be made of metal.  The original bandstands were made of wood but things have moved on since 1883 when the park was first opened and it is felt that a metal structure would be less of a target for vandals.View of the Lodge in spring (Photograph taken by Ken Kaye)
