Replacement of the Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre was provided by Kirklees Council in 2003 and was situated near the main entrance of the Park. It was officially opened by Sir John Harman, chairman of the Environment Agency. In 2007 the Friends of Beaumont Park (FoBP) improved the Visitor Centre with money from the Community Chest (sponsored by Cummins Turbo Technologies) and Awards for All.

As the Park became more popular, it became apparent that the Visitor Centre was too small to accommodate the demands put on it. In 2012 a bid was submitted to Biffa to replace the building. Unfortunately, the bid failed as there were too many applicants for the funds available. Undeterred a new bid was successful and the project was funded by the Area Committee of Kirklees Council and FoBP.

Old Visitor Centre Demolition

Original Gone

Work started on 29th October 2012. One of the existing storage containers was moved forward to make room for the new larger building. Three days later branches were removed from the intruding trees and on 3rd November the FoBP volunteer removal team sprang into action to empty the old Visitor Centre building.

On 8th November the old visitor centre was demolished and removed and by 16th November the extended footings were installed.

Crane Arrives

An Actiform Crane brought and placed the new building on the current site - in three sections. Over the next few days contractors connected the sections together, installed all the facilities and created a new entrance including a ramp from the main pathway.

Almost Complete

In April 2014 decking was built at the back of the centre with views over the valley and it was completed in time for Easter.

The Visitor Centre is open on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons for refreshments - for teas, coffee and homemade cakes organised by FoBP volunteers. In July and August, the Centre is similarly open on Saturdays. At least once a month Dave holds a Bacon Butty Day.

Monies raised by the Visitor Centre are used for the continued restoration of the park and additional income is generated by hiring out the Centre to a variety of community groups. Take a look at the News on the Home Page for what is on and the Calendar for regular activites and other events. The visitor centre is also available for hire for small parties and meetings.
