     Title: Neolithic Axe Head Found in Beaumont Park

An exciting find!  Our Woodland Management team found the axe head whilst preparing to plant a tree in the upper area of the park.

The West Yorkshire Archaelogy Advisory Service reports that 6 similar axes or fragments of axes have been found in the Kirklees District.  These were discovered at Denby, Almondbury, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Fixby and Meltham. The 'find' is an earlier Neolithic (c. 3,500BC) polished flint axe.  It would have been sourced on the east coast of England; the manufacture of such a tool would involve the selection (and perhaps extraction) of a suitable rough cut which would undergo a process of grinding and polishing to create the finished axe.
